Little Sid is a very adorable French Bulldog who arrived at our clinic after being in a scuffle at the park with another dog. Sid was in a little bit of pain and on closer examination Dr Alex noticed some fight wounds on Sid's abdomen. Surgery was required so Sid was admitted into our hospital ward.
Dog bites can result in significant trauma from the teeth of the other dog as the teeth can crush, tear, puncture or cause lacerations of the skin and underlying tissues. The mouth is also an environment filled with bacteria. Therefore, all bite wounds are considered contaminated and the possibility of infection is very high. It is because of these things that dog bites need to be treated immediately.
Dr Alex performed surgery on Sid. As the teeth marks can puncture quite deep and cause muscle damage, a surgical examination is required to ensure that no muscle damage has occurred from the teeth punctures. Once the surgical examination was complete, Dr Alex then placed a drain where the teeth marks were to help remove any infection through the drain. This ensures that the wound doesn't become infected and swollen. Sid had some stitches to close the wound up before he was moved to the recovery room.
As there is the possibility of abdominal bleeding or gut bruising, Sid was taken to the Essendon Emergency Centre for overnight care where they could keep a close watch on him. Sid returned to our clinic the next day for further attention in our hospital ward. As he was very bright and alert, and had recovered well from his extensive surgery, Sid was sent home that afternoon on strict rest.
